Alitalia began the year 2015 with a new business plan after merging with the Emirate airline company Etihad Airways, which invested the sum of 387.5 million euros in Alitalia, thus owning 49% of the company. The restructuring will include a greater focus on destinations in Asia and the Middle East, using the Etihad Airways hub in the Abu Dhabi Airport as base. This way, there will be an increase in the frequency between destinations like Catania, Roma, Milan, Venice, and Abu Dhabi, with 35 weekly flights. It’s too early to speculate how this will affect Alitalia, but no major changes are believed to take place for the moment, though the increase in new routes might give way to interesting offers.
